This year I shall mostly be reading...
The insides of my eyes.
Should I pick up a piece of non fiction, I think the first book I shall turn to will be The Drunkan Botanist by Amy Stewart. An excellent read and reference to plants and their use in booze.
Secondly, after recent events in Hong Kong I may revisit Chris Patten's East and West. A book covering his last years as HK govenor prior to handover to the tiddlys.
Finally, if my summer exersions allow me time I might finally get round to An Irrational Hatred Of Everything by Robert Banks. I bought it a while back and never got round to reading it. Now is the time I suppose.

What an incredible man he was and how he survived I do not know.
Not only that, how an earth did he ever get any of these missions off the ground with his organisational skills?

If you want autobiography, "Life" by Keith Richards is good.
Can't vouch that it's all truly "non-fiction" (as he's been off his nuts since a teen) but it's a fine page-turner. Mental existence. How he is alive astounds me.

I've just finished a book on how ships are made - riveting.
Seriously though. UNBROKEN is a brilliant book about Olympic hopeful Louis Zamperini and his war time experience. It is a great book to put your own life in perspective and be grateful for what you have and what you've not had to deal with!
To think that this bloke survived everything that he did is quite remarkable.

Vietnam - An epic history of a tragic war by Max Hastings is really good, but quite lengthy if you like that sort of thing. What a fucking mess first France then the USA made of Indo-China!

To be fair, she has written some absolute rubbish, too. An arse of a woman, who's convinced she can see ghosts. Silly baggage. All that nonsense leaks into her other books. She really should stick to historical fiction.

Agree about A place of greater safety...think it's by far the best book she has written. Read a number of books about the French Revolution and the 3 main characters in the book are portrayed really well.

The book he wrote himself 'South' is an absolute must read. You will never moan about your hardships ever again when you've read that.
"The Worst Journey is the World" by Apsley Cherry Garrard is very good as well.

In that case, given you like that historical period and novels based on real events, I highly recommend 'A Place of Greater Safety' by Hilary Mantel. She is better known for Wolf Hall, but I think 'Place' is the better novel. None of that highly stylised pronoun ambiguity for starters. I know some people found that annoying. It didn't bother me.

Nursey. When I was a kid I read the DENNIS Wheatley series of books with roger brook as the fictitious character who went right through the period of the French Revolution and the way he worked to make sure he was present at every major incident over the period was fantastic, 14 books I think
